COURSE OVERVIEW
This course presents the fundamentals of project management as applied in the built environment and more specifically for the construction industry. Participants will learn about the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) using real-life examples to demonstrate how various project management principles and concepts can be applied in practice. This course offers an insight into what project management is as well as the project life cycles, stakeholders and organizations involved. It explains the project management processes and how these processes are applied in integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resource, communication, risk, procurement and stakeholder management. Participants will also appreciate issues related to ethics and professional conduct in the project management profession. There will be a quiz at the end of each topic to affirm participants’ understanding of the fundamentals of project management in the construction industry.

Topic 1

Introduction to Project Management – participants should be able to appreciate that project management is among other things, the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to meet project requirements.

Topic 2

Project life Cycles, Stakeholders and Organizations – participants should be able to appreciate the roles of project phasing, project life cycle, project stakeholders and different organizational models in the context of project management.

Topic 3

Project Management Processes – participants should be able to understand that project management activities are accomplished through the use of processes that include initiating, planning, executing, monitoring/controlling, and closing.

Topic 4

Project Integration Management – participants should be able to understand what needs to be coordinated and integrated to ensure that the project is properly planned, executed and controlled.

Topic 5

Project Scope Management – participants should be able to understand what must be done in managing the project and in defining how large or complex the project is.

Topic 6

Project Time Management – participants should be able to understand when activities need to be done and the development of a schedule that can be met as well as controlling the work to ensure that it happens.

Topic 7

Project Cost Management – participants should be able to understand how much the project will cost that includes estimating the cost of resources, performing cost budgeting and tracking to keep the project within the pre-determined budget

Topic 8

Project Quality Management – participants should be able to appreciate how good the project will be that includes plans to meet quality requirements and steps to monitor results to audit if these conform to pre-determined requirements.

Topic 9

Project Human Resource Management – participants should be able to understand who will do the work in the project that includes issues relating to staffing, evaluating, motivating and identifying people needed to do the job.

Topic 10

Project Communications Management – participants should be able to understand how information is to be delivered in the project that includes planning, executing and controlling the acquisition and dissemination of all information relevant to the needs of all project stakeholders.

Topic 11

Project Risk Management – participants should be able to appreciate the problems likely to be encountered in the project that includes systematically identifying, quantifying, analyzing and responding to project risks.

Topic 12

Project Procurement Management – participants should be able to understand the materials, suppliers, talents and equipment that must be obtained for the project that includes sourcing and managing suppliers as well as management of contracts.

Topic 13

Project Ethics and Professional Conduct – participants should be able to appreciate that the project management professional must always adhere to a high set of principles, rules and policies that includes best practices for the advancement of the profession.
